It came to me in the middle of the night: I woke up and went to the bathroom, and on the way back to bed it was suddenly clear. He wanted me to help him get up. That's why he kept grasping my finger, to use it to point up. He wasn't pointing to the television, he was pointing up. And I thought he was grasping at his gown and trying to remove it because something was uncomfortable. Now I think he thought it was a blanket, and he was trying to pull it off the way you would getting out of bed.
I like the idea of making a big Yes and a big No. I've already created an alphabet chart to use, and I'll print out the "yes" and "no" in huge letters before I go. Of course he can't get up, but if we can communicate a little better it may ease his frustration.
I've been following Laura's advice, cycling through all of the things that I think would worry him, especially his beloved cats, his companions. Thank you *so* much, Laura and Jonny, for tending to them. I have two cats here, and we call Dad's cats (and my brother's dogs and cats) their cousins.
I got good news last night that his plane has been retrieved from impound and transported to the hangar at Flabob airport. I'll let Dad know. Last night when we were trying the hand-squeeze method of communication, I told him that we had all established these virtual, on-line relationships. I told him that I had "met" the folks out at Flabob. I said "Jim Pyle," and he squeezed my hand. I said "Jan Buttermore," and he squeezed my hand. I said "Roger," and he squeezed my hand. These are all his buddies from the airport, and it was great to let him know that we are all connected. Jim invited me to come out to Riverside on Sunday for the January meeting of the Experimental Aircraft Assn. I'm going to see if I can do that. I'd really like to see them all. The only problem is that I'm getting pretty tired -- at night I crash pretty hard (no pun intended) when I get home from the hospital.
Carole, Dad's temperature is still 38.4 c. They started him on a different antibiotic yesterday. I don't know whether that was just a guess, or if they got some information from the cultures they are growing. I think it might be too early for the cultures.
It's very early in the morning here in Los Angeles. I'm going to go visit him, then drive out to my client in Santa Monica, and stop at the Wednesday morning farmers market out there to stock my refrigerator with fresh healthy food. I'll post again tonight.

Deb,
I just wanted to reiterate what has already been stated here many times, THANK YOU for updating this blog as often as you do. I realise that I'm the "little" cousin living three thousand miles away but my concearn for you, Rick and your dad is emense. We all get to feel connected to the problems at hand, we get to feel the emotional roller coaster you are on.
Again best wishes and prayers from Billerica, Ma. cousin Bobby
p.s BJ is having computer issues and will be posting soon,
P.S.S. Tell your dad that BJ and I will be waiting on Tom Sawyers Island in Disney
Hi Deb,
Sounds like Dick is really frustrated not being able to communicate. You are doing a great job trying to come up with ideas to help. Check with speech therapy, they often have a picture board that helps. Also try a portable dry erase board with a marker. The marker will probably be easier for Dick to hold than a pen or pencil.
I have a few questions. When will they be able to start to get him up? Is Therapy working with him yet? And any idea when they will move him out of the ICU?
If Dick is able to cough out secretions maybe respiratory can try a trial of using a passey muir valve on the end of the trach. This allows him to talk. Often a patient will only tolerate it for a few hours at first. Then they are able to wear it most of the day. It makes a big difference.
Give Dick our best.

Deborah,
I too want to reiterate what has been said many times over...this blog update is wonderful. I am connected and want Dick, Rick, and you to know that we here in San Diego are also, as cablebob said, "riding the rollar coaster with you". I feel so helpless at times, wishing I could help in some tangible way, and very greatful for Carole and Maryanne, who are able to give you information and advice. Just know that there are many, many of us out here thinking, praying, lighting candles, chanting (trying to cover all the spiritual bases) for Dick's recovery and your emotional and physical well-being as well.
Caitlin finally got her violin. For the last 2 days I have been listening to the scale. This morning I heard and moreover recognized "Go Tell Aunt Rosie". You'd be so proud of her.
Love, hugs, and prayers,
Cousin Marilyn
Ask the nurses when they anticipate him being able to sit up, even if it's in bed. He may need to wear a neck brace, but I think the trade off is worth it from many perspectives. Maryanne, any thoughts on why they haven't gotten him up yet? Since he's alert, I would think they'd start moving him around a little more...within reason. Even if they tell you it will be 2 more days, at least that's some information you can share with your Dad. He never was the kind of guy who liked to lie around, so this must be driving him crazy!
I doubt that the blood cultures are back yet, but the MDs can see that he still has a temperature and his white blood cells are still elevated. That means that the current antibiotic isn't taking care of the current problem. They probably are guessing at this point what med would be good, but it beats waiting for days and days for the cultures and sensitivities to come back. Taking a stab in the dark is often a good thing. Hey! They could get lucky, and they'll see positive results before the C&S reports even come back. I think it's a good decision to start him on the second drug. I he started it yesterday, and it's a good match for the germs, you'll start see results probably by late Thursday/early Friday. Trying to recouperate from the accident, the surgeries, and now pneumonia is a full time job for your Dad, and it sounds like he is coming through it like a real trooper. Hang in there Uncle Dick.
And you and Ricky take care of yourselves as well.
Cousin Carole
"UP". WOW! How simple, and how obvious now that you have figured it out. Dick will probably think that be was being so obvious, and can't understand why you didn't get his clues. A new appreciation of the game of Charades I suppose. Perhaps you'll need to add an up and down arrow to your pictures, along with body parts. Head up, feet down, etc.
Hi Dick!
Argyle Street, Central, Miss Henry, Mitchell's, the "itch", Fireman's Field, Curtis Field,............. I expect you'll be coming up with your own Valley Stream memories soon. Know that all are eager for each little step in your recovery, each in its own time however.
I see a book in this saga, written by a father/daughter team. There is so much emotion in these events, so much human experience, so much to share with everyone. And then of course there will be the movie version...I have my cast chosen, does anyone else?

Hi Dris,
Can't understand why they aren't mobilzing him yet. Usually by now with the surgery they did, they have him up into a chair. So I agree with you for Debby to find out the time frame for that.
We know that he'll heal quicker as he starts to move more.
Debby it's great talking with you and Dris and seeing everyone's imput. This blog is a wonderful way to stay connected to Dicks progress.
Hang in there.
Maryanne
